One BMW model can take four different windscreens.
A 3 Series or X5 windscreen varies by head-up display, rain sensor, heated wiper park, camera housing and glass tint. Getting the right one first time is the difference between a morning job and a car sitting in pieces waiting on stock.
Head-up display cars are the usual trap. The HUD screen uses a wedge-shaped interlayer to stop the projected speed readout appearing as a doubled image. Fit a standard screen to a HUD car and the display becomes a blurred ghost — the glass has to come out again.
Many BMWs also run infrared-reflective glass, which keeps the cabin measurably cooler in a Sydney summer. It looks near identical to standard glass on the shelf but performs very differently, so we work from the vehicle's build details rather than the model badge.
BMW Driving Assistant relies on a camera reading the road through your windscreen. We recalibrate it as part of the replacement, using Hella, Autel and TEXA equipment, and give you the report.
